Head and neck cancers tally to be the commonest cancers in males in India owing to the widespread use of tobacco products. Cancer is treatable if detected early. The objective of this program was to indoctrinate the most vulnerable and the least tended upon; the basics of Head & Neck Cancers via the medium of their own kins & folks. The program involved people at the grass root level - the neighbors , the friends , the relatives – the common Indian village. Voluntary health workers were educated and trained to pick up the telltale signs of cancer in the local population. Head & Neck Cancer brochures were distributed among the village folk.
Over the period of 2008-2011, 1862 villages were covered. The population of 26,10,432 was surveyed, of which 10,40,480 (39.89%) were found be to be addicted to some form of tobacco. 54214 health education meetings were held in which an average of 21 persons was enlightened per meeting. We were successful in making 10, 522 (1.1%) people quit tobacco. 3309 persons were referred to medical centers for workup, of which 1890 came out to be positive for malignancy and 1434 persons ended up taking treatment.
We have developed techniques for rapid diagnosis and various treatment modalities. However, detection rates continue to lag behind. Involvement of the common man could help us in detecting such cases and for their prompt referral. This program’s success is an example that could be used as a pilot in a country such as ours.
